6 Track and Field Athletes are State Finals Bound

The Men's and Women's track and field teams travelled to Albion for the Regional meet on Friday, May 18. On the girls team, Alison Bosch qualified for the State Finals in the discuss while Kate McLain is returning to the state finals for the third year on a row in the 3200 meter run.
On the men's side, Doug Hollett won both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs to earn his place on the state finals race while Clayton Meldrum won both the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles. In the field events, Cole VanOosten was the regional champ in the shot put and teammate Kyle Munson also had a state qualifying throw.
The men's team place a respectable third place while the women's team place 6th out of 13 teams.

The students set up scaffolding, scraped, cleaned and painted and then celebrated with some pizza and cookies. "They volunteered to help make improvements. The concession stand looks awesome! Everyone worked hard and had a lot of fun".

Kalamazoo Christian’s Britney Laaksonen scored on a game-winning penalty kick to beat host Delton Kellogg and win the Kalamazoo Valley Association title in a shootout in girls soccer Friday. Laaksonen also scored the equalizing goal with 11 minutes remaining that sent the game to overtime tied 1-1. After two scoreless overtimes, Kalamazoo Christian outscored Delton Kellogg 3-2 in a shootout.
Kalamazoo Christian’s Allison Snowden made 13 saves, including three during the shootout, and Josie Nieboer and Alyson Katje both scored in the shootout. “We felt pretty good going into the shootout because of our goalkeeper,” Kalamazoo Christian coach Ron Smilanich said. “We have an excellent keeper in Snowden. She was excellent.”
Delton Kellogg’s Sarah Rendon scored a goal in the first half, Sam Zettlemaier and Brianna Russell both scored a goal in the shootout, and Christy Gonzalez finished with three saves.
“It was a great game, and Delton has a very good team,” Smilanich said. “It was an even game the whole way for both teams. We’re just happy with the
outcome.”

Over the past several weeks the track and field teams have had some very impressive performances and the school record board has a new look. Cole VanOosten set a new school record in the shot put in a meet against Hackett with a throw of 51’ 6”. In addition, Clayton Meldrum set a school record in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.09. At the Gobles Invitational on Friday, May 11, Cole VanOosten won the invite in the shot put, Clay Meldrum won both the 110 and 300 hurdles and Doug Hollett was the meet champion in the mile run. For the women’s team, Kate McLain had a solid 2nd place performance in the 2 mile run and the 4 X 800 relay team took third out of 9 teams. The women’s team finished the meet 7th out of 16 teams while the men’s team was 4th out of 16.

The Comets Men’s Track and Field team placed 5th overall at the Bangor Invitational on Saturday, May 4th. They defeated Hackett, Coloma, and Hartford at the meet. Cole VanOosten threw a personal best 47’11” in the shot put to take first place. Also, Doug Hollet won the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:37 and had a hard fought 2nd place finish in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:08. In the 300 hurdles, Clayton Meldrum took 2nd place with a personal record of 41.01. Other personal best were set by Ben Havenaar, Joel Stehouwer, Daniel Baljeu, Levi Wolthius, Joel Vanderkamp, and Brennan Heidema.

The girl's track and field season is already half over but the excitement is just beginning. After several rain or snow-outs, the girls season started at the Marcellus Co-ed Invitational. There they combined with the boys team to bring home the second place trophy. At the dual meet vs. Delton, the girls lost by only 14 points. The next week they lost by only 11 points, this time to Constantine. They then traveled to Schoolcraft for the Schoolcraft Invitational. There they had a great meet, finishing in 2nd place overall. Medals were earned by Allison Bosch, Hannah Wolthuis, Erika DeKoekkoek, Brooke Leep, Samantha Beebe, Kate McLain, Tess DeJong, Alicia Wright, Hannah Hendriksen, Becca Dykstra & Drea Youngblood. On this past Tuesday, the team traveled to Parchment where they beat the Panthers by 20 points. Personal records & great performances were set by Tori Veldkamp, Alison Dunlap, Angel Augustus, Anna Garcia, Carley Ackerman, Catherine Lilek, Chloe Maxwell, Erin Meinema, Gabby Brandy, Gillian Heidema, Jessica Crawford, Jodi Stoffer, Micaela Ziegler, Paige Sikkenga & Sarah Fase. On May 3 the girls will be at the Bangor Invite and next week they have a busy week with Monday at Hackett, Tuesday at Maple Valley and Friday at the Gobles Invite. Come on out and support our team!

Current Events:FREE GIRLS BASKETBALL SHOOTING CLINIC!
The varsity girls’ basketball coach, Kelly Allen will be putting on some free shooting clinics at the Elementary School for girls in grades 3 - 12. Please bring a ball and come dressed to play. Shooting technique and games will be taught. The dates are: March 12 and 26, from 5 to 6 PM, April 16 and 30, from 5 to 6PM, May 14 and 21 from 5 to 6PM. These will be held at the Elementary.
